FAQ
Here are the answers to the questions people ask us the most — quick, clear, and easy to follow.
Who can buy expat insurance?

Anyone who holds a foreign passport or residence card who plans to come to Spain or are already in Spain can buy the expat (health) insurance.

What’s the difference between expat insurance and travel insurance?
  • Travel insurance usually sets a limit of maximum 3 months abroad. The expat insurance doesn’t. It offers you continuous protection no matter how long you stay in Spain.

  • Travel insurance only covers emergencies. The expat (health) insurance covers emergencies, medical specialties, diagnostic tests, hospitalization, ICU, rehabilitation and more.

  • Travel insurance does NOT meet the requirements of residency application and renewal in Spain. The expat (health) insurance does.

The expat insurance should be purchased for what duration?

According to the VISA/residence application and renewal requirements, the insurance should cover your entire stay in Spain.

If you stay in Spain for more than 1 year, you can insure for 1 year and renew the insurance annually.

Why is expat insurance calculated by the month not by the day?

Expat insurance is health insurance and most health insurance in Spain insures in months, with the start date the 1st day of a month and the end date the last day of a month.

How do I choose the start and end dates?

Make sure that the insurance covers your entire stay in Spain. For example, if you stay in Spain between June 2018 and April 2019, then select June 2018 as the start month and April 2019 the end month. At least a 3-month period needs to be selected.

What if I need to buy insurance for a group?

If you’re buying insurance for more than 6 people, fill in the form called Insure for a Group, and we’ll contact you within hours.

Is my payment secure?

Absolutely! We use the same payment platform that Google, Amazon, and thousands of big enterprises are using. We do NOT store your payment information on our website.

What insurance documents should I submit for my visa or NIE application?

We will send you the insurance certificate and detailed terms which fully meet the Immigration and embassy requirements.

When will I receive the documents?

We guarantee the documents will be sent to you within 1-3 working days after completing the order.

How do I change my policy period?

If you need to extend your insurance, you can click the Renew button on Dashboard → My Insurances, or place a new order indicating the number of months you would like to add. Please contact us if you have any questions regarding the renewals.

If you need to change the start date of your insurance, please contact us at least 3 working days before the scheduled start date. Due to the administrative workload involved in processing modification requests, a management fee of €10 per person will apply from the second modification request onward.

How do I cancel my insurance?

We do not normally accept cancellations. We only accept cancellations if your VISA or residency/renewal application is rejected. Just contact us indicating your policy certificate along with rejection letter and we'll take care of the rest. For more information regarding the refund policy, please check here.

In the case mentioned above, we will process the refund of all unused months in full within a period, generally of 1 month, depending on the case it may take longer (the time in which the money is reflected in your bank account will depend on your bank). Reimbursement costs for payments collected by third parties and fluctuations caused by the exchange rate will not be covered.

Is COVID-19 covered?

Yes, testing and treatment are covered.

What is the “Deductible”?

The deductible is the amount paid by the policyholder before the insurance company starts to pay. Our insurance does NOT have deductibles.

What is “Copayment”?

A copayment is a flat fee paid by the policyholder to the hospital/clinic for a covered service. Our insurance does NOT have copayments.

What is the “Waiting period”

A waiting period is the amount of time a policyholder must wait before some or all of their coverage comes into effect. Our insurance does NOT have a waiting period.

Can I Renew my Expat Insurance?

For existing clients seeking to renew their insurance, we recommend initiating the renewal process at least 1 week before your current policy's expiration date. Renewals beyond this period may be checked on a case-by-case basis according to company policy.

To ensure a seamless renewal, it's important to purchase the next consecutive month's coverage without any gaps. This facilitates the continuity of your insurance without interruptions.

If you have any question, please contact us.

Why is the previously offered insurance product no longer visible on the purchase page?

At Innoinsure, we provide specialized expat insurance options tailored for Spanish visa/residency requirements, featuring characteristics such as no waiting periods and repatriation for visa applications. If you are unable to locate a specific insurance policy on the purchase page, it could be attributed to modifications in the eligibility criteria for new customers set by the insurance company. However, we encourage you to explore other eligible expat insurance products on our website that fully satisfy 100% of visa requirements. For more comprehensive details, please do not hesitate to get in touch with us.

How long does it take before I can use my insurance?

If you purchase insurance near or after your policy's start date, it may take the insurance company and hospital around two weeks to process and activate your coverage. Processing times can be even longer during public holidays or peak vacation periods.

To avoid delays and ensure uninterrupted coverage, we strongly recommend purchasing your insurance well in advance and carefully selecting an appropriate start date.

How do I renew my insurance policy?

To renew your insurance, please contact us at least 5 working days before the end date

of your current policy. If we do not receive your renewal request in time, it may be treated as a new application rather than a renewal.

The new policy period may come with a new insurance card and a new policy number.

For a smooth transition and uninterrupted coverage, we recommend submitting your renewal request as early as possible.
